Thomas Madock's Sons Company Lulu Temple Stein |
Description |
The object is a dark red and pink cylindrical-shaped stein featuring an image of the Lulu Temple on both the front and back. The bottom of the stein is dark red, while the middle and top are pink. The image of the Lulu Temple on the front is framed by a vertical half-circle with a black outline. The background of the image is white, and the building is depicted in various shades of grey, as seen from the perspective of someone viewing the building from the right side. At the bottom of the building is a small stairway with stairs on the right and left sides, with a small awning extending from the top of the staircase. The first section of the building features a large archway, split into three oval-shaped sections. On either side of the archway are smaller archways, each also divided into three oval sections. Above each of these smaller archways, there are three oval-shaped openings. The first section of the building has two rows of windows: the first row contains five long vertical oval windows, while the second row has five small circular windows. To the right and left of these windows are additional small archways, divided similarly to the ones below. Above the second section is the roof, with elevated rectangular sections on the left and right sides resembling a medieval castle. The center of the roof features a larger onion dome, surrounded by three smaller onion domes. To the right of the main building is an attached rectangular structure with four stories and eight windows, with two windows per story. The handle of the stein is located on the right side and is shaped like a half-heart. Like the bottom of the stein, the handle is dark red. The image of the Lulu Temple on the back is framed by a slightly smaller half-circle, in the same color as the one on the front. The depiction of the building on the back differs from the front. The first section of the building on the back consists of five oval-shaped openings. Above these openings are five more oval-shaped openings in the second portion of the building, slightly longer than those at the bottom. Above these openings is the Shriner's International logo and an inscription. The inscription at the top reads, "July. Atlantic City." Below this, there is the Shriner's logo, which features a sword attached to a crescent moon through a small chain link. The moon faces downward, and a pharaoh's head is centered on the moon, with an upside-down five-pointed star hanging from the pharaoh's head. The bottom of the inscription reads "1904." The top of the stein is open, revealing the inside, which, along with the bottom, is white. The center of the bottom of the stein bears a red logo for Thomas Maddock's Sons Company, reading "Thos Maddock Sons Co. Trenton N.J." According to the Trenton City Museum, Thomas Maddock, born in 1818 in Staffordshire, England, came from a family of potters. Maddock moved to New York in 1847 with his first wife, Honor Bossom, and their two sons. After Bossom's death in 1851, Maddock remarried Isabella Smith in 1852 and had three more sons. In 1873, Maddock relocated to Trenton and began producing pottery, including sanitary ware, dinnerware, and utensils. Over the years, Maddock's company grew rapidly, purchasing rival pottery companies, including Glasgow Pottery and Lamberton Works. Maddock's company operated under various names, including Millington, Astbury and Maddock, Maddock's Lamberton Works, and Thomas Maddock's Sons Company. Thomas Maddock passed away in 1899, but his sons continued his work. In 1923, they sold Lamberton Works to the Scammell family and, in 1929, sold the entire operation to American Radiator and Standard Sanitary Corporation. According to the Shriners International website, Shriners International, originally known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, was founded in 1870 by 13 Masons during a meeting at Knickerbocker College in New York City. The group aimed to combine the principles of Freemasonry with elements of fun and fellowship. Initially, Shriners were associated with Middle Eastern culture and symbols, but following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, much of the Middle Eastern imagery was removed. Shriners are known for wearing a fez, a hat popular in Morocco, during their meetings. The sword on their logo represents the members, the crescent moon represents philanthropy, the pharaoh (or sphinx) symbolizes governance, and the five-pointed star represents the children the organization helps. Today, there are approximately 195 Shriners temples worldwide. Citations: About Shriners. Shriners International.
