Cook China Company White Vase with Carved Leaves |
Description |
This white vase features an intricate leaf design on the front. The base of the vase is footed, with the foot starting as a wide circle and gradually narrowing toward the main body of the vase. The main portion begins as a thick cylinder, tapering slightly as it rises toward the top. The vase's handles are designed as large leaves with small stems, and each handle has a smaller leaf growing above it. Curved stems sprout from the top and bottom leaves, meeting at both the top and bottom of the main portion of the vase. A smaller leaf, with a long stem that eventually splits into two, sits near the middle of the top of the vase. These two stems connect with the other leaves' stems. The top of the vase is shaped like a triangle that curves forward, with the right and left sides jutting out slightly, as they are wider than the upper part of the vase's body. The back of the vase is plain, with none of the detailed design seen on the front. The top reveals two triangular openings that expose the interior of the vase. The edges of these triangles are irregular and bumpy. The bottom of the vase is slightly caved in, and the number "9877" is impressed on the top of the bottom. Accompanying the vase is a note that reads: "This item is a WONDERFUL VINTAGE Pottery WHITE VASE with a beautiful design.............SEE PICTURES. According to Philips-DeGraft Flip Top Bowls and the Trenton Museum Society, the Cook China Company, also known as the Cook Pottery Company, was founded in 1893 or 1894 when Charles H. Cook purchased the Ott & Brewer Pottery. They operated on the site of the Dale & Davis plant on Prospect Street. One of their most notable pieces was a Spanish-American pitcher honoring Admiral Dewey. The Cook China Company continued operations until 1932.
