E.F. Hooper & Company Turptine Bottle |
Description |
A clear cylindrical-shaped bottle with a rectangular label on the front. The bottle gradually narrows toward the top, featuring an elevated rim. The label is blue with yellow text that reads, "SPIRITS TURPENTINE FROM E.F. HOOPER & Co. Paints Varnishes Brushes. 8 - 10 S. WARREN STREET 868 S. BROAD STREET OLDEN AT HAMILTON AVES. TRENTON, N.J." The bottom of the bottle is embossed with a logo resembling a horizontal oval atop a vertical oval, surrounded by the number "4" on its right, bottom, and left sides. This bottle comes with four advertisements and a bill of purchase. The bill shows that E.F. Hooper & Company sold items to the Trenton Free Public Library on November 2, 1908. The first advertisement reads, "A fading green paint has spoiled the appearance of many a home that looked fine when freshly painted. Ask about Cabot Collopakes. E.F. HOOPER & CO." The second advertisement reads, "We sell Paints. Our whole building is devoted to Paints. Our whole energies, too. We think we are better equipped to serve you-in stock on hand, in experience, in special skill, in values, in prices-than the man whose business is something else, and who sells Paints as a 'side line.' Come and see us. E.F. HOOPER, 8 South Warren St., TRENTON, N.J." The third advertisement reads, "Hooper's Paints Have Brightened Trenton Since 1854. Giant Forces. Daily, the elements menace your house. Wind, laden with dust and sand like a mighty rasp grinds against its surface. Rain relentlessly on every exposed part. Sun-heat with blistering intensity warps and disintegrates. Only Good Paint Can Save it. It matters not whether the material is brick, wood, concrete, or plaster, paint prevents deterioration that is, otherwise, sure to set in. Your problem is getting the RIGHT paint and brands best for the surface that is in danger, and it is this specialty paint store's job to serve you with intelligence that comes of our seventy-odd years of experience and observation. Come for an over-the-counter selection of brands and kinds, or request us to send a sales-man who is also a paint engineer. E.F. HOOPER & CO. 'The Paint People.' 8&10 S. Warren St. and 816 S. Broad St. Trenton, N.J. Phone 8228." The fourth note reads, "Founded in 1854. Seventy-Five Years of Trenton's Greatest Paint Stores. Since the founding of this business in 1854 and its continuance by E.F. Hooper and R.M. Sutcliffe it has grown as steadily as has the city it has served. Now, as always, this outstanding store carries only those paints that are worthy of a place in its stock. E.F. HOOPER & COMPANY. 8-10 SOUTH WARRENT STREET. 816 SOUTH BROAD STREET." According to documents from the Trenton Free Public Library, E.F. Hooper & Company was a paint company established in 1854 in Trenton, New Jersey. The business was eventually managed by E.F. Hooper and R.M. Sutcliffe. They were known for selling paints, varnishes, brushes, oils, turpentine, and other paint-related products. The company operated for over 75 years. Citations E.F.
