Scammell China Company Gold Floral Coffee Cup |
Description |
This white and light brown cylindrical coffee cup features a floral and star pattern on both the front and back. The cup is slightly tapered towards the bottom, with the lower and middle portions in white and the upper section in light brown. A black, squiggly vine-like line separates the two sections. The floral design appears on the upper portion of the white section, with three flowers in total on the front: a reddish-purple flower on the left and two light orange flowers on the top and right. Behind the flowers, there are various blue and green foliage accents. On the light brown portion, white stars are scattered across the surface. Above the brown section, a black line separates it from the white rim. The right side of the cup mirrors the front, but without the floral design. The back of the cup is identical to the front. The left side is mostly white and features the handle, which is decorated with a small red flower, two green leaves, and a black vine running from top to bottom. The top of the cup is open and has a small white rim. Inside the cup, near the top, there is a decorative design depicting two assortments of fruit, each separated by long banners. The banners feature a green rim, a black center, and multiple yellow arrows pointing clockwise, resembling sideways "V"s. The fruits in the design, from left to right, appear to include purple grapes, a red apple, a yellow pear, a pink peach, a brown circular fruit, and more purple and yellow grapes, all surrounded by leaves. The bottom of the cup is stamped with the green Scammell China Company logo. Above the logo, the words "IVORY LAMBERTON" are displayed. The logo also features a crown atop a shield surrounded by a laurel wreath. A large "S" is centered on the shield, with the word "CHINA" beneath it, within the wreath. Below the image, the inscription reads "SCAMMELL. U.S.A. 1938." According to Harry Rinkler of WorthPoint, Scammell China Company originated in 1869 when George Comfort, Thomas Bell, and Jonathan Stewart founded Lamberton Works, a two-kiln pottery company. The company continued under this name until Thomas Maddock purchased it. D. William Scammell later bought out Maddock's interest, and in 1923, he and his five brothers assumed full control and changed the name to Scammell China Company. The company closed in 1955.
