Scammell China Company Brown Pattern Finger Bowl |
Description |
A white circular-shaped finger bowl featuring a brown pattern around the rim. The top portion of the pattern consists of a rectangle with circles inside. The second layer is mostly blank, with a small floral pattern repeated five times. Each floral pattern consists of a singular flower with vines extending from the right and left sides. The flowers and vines point downwards and are bracketed by two curved vertical lines on either side. The bottom line of the design features a series of small dots, and the two lines are interrupted 21 times by small flowers. The front of the bowl is slightly caved in, which makes the back of the bowl elevated. A thick rim separates the base from the rest of the back. In the center of the base is a brown Scammell China Company logo that reads, "SCAMMELL's. TRENTON CHINA." According to Harry Rinkler of WorthPoint, Scammell China Company originated in 1869 when George Comfort, Thomas Bell, and Jonathan Stewart founded Lamberton Works, a two-kiln pottery company. The company continued under this name until Thomas Maddock purchased it. D. William Scammell later bought out Maddock's interest, and in 1923, he and his five brothers assumed full control and changed the name to Scammell China Company. The company closed in 1955.
