Scammell China Company Silver's Desert Dish |
Description |
A white oval-shaped dessert dish featuring a blue pattern around the rim. The pattern consists of a rectangular border that encircles the entirety of the rim, interrupted 15 times by "X"-like shapes. Below this rectangle, the design alternates between images of trophies and cornucopias, separated by a curvy line. The trophies are shaped like half-circles with points on top and footed bottoms, each featuring a large "S" in the center. The cornucopias resemble rectangular baskets filled with various fruits, with grapes on the edges and round fruits near the center. The pattern features four trophies and three cornucopias. At the top of the second layer of the design is the word "Silver's," underlined with a thick line. The front of the dish is caved in, and as a result, the back is elevated with a thick rim separating the base from the rest of the back. The base features a blue Scammell China Company logo near the center, which reads, "SCAMMELL'S. TRENTON CHINA. DESIGN PATENTED." According to Harry Rinkler of WorthPoint, Scammell China Company originated in 1869 when George Comfort, Thomas Bell, and Jonathan Stewart founded Lamberton Works, a two-kiln pottery company. The company continued under this name until Thomas Maddock purchased it. D. William Scammell later bought out Maddock's interest, and in 1923, he and his five brothers assumed full control and changed the name to Scammell China Company. The company closed in 1955.
