Title |
Scammell China Company Green Cigar Holder |
Description |
The object is a dark green, square-shaped cigar holder with a large pillar protruding from the top. The square base features two indentations at the back, which converge toward the front, likely designed to hold cigars. The large pillar is adorned with a family crest embossed on the front. The crest depicts a lion at the top, a shield in the center, and a banner at the bottom. The shield is marked with three birds: two are positioned above the shield, and one is below. The banner beneath the shield bears the inscription "THE STEVENS." A smaller pillar is located behind the larger one. The larger pillar has a circular hole at the top, revealing part of the interior. The base has no solid bottom, except for the rim, and the areas of the top that are indented are elevated from below. There is also an indentation on the bottom that aligns with the pillar above. Embossed on the underside is the inscription "LAMBERTON CHINA." According to Harry Rinkler of WorthPoint, Scammell China Company originated in 1869 when George Comfort, Thomas Bell, and Jonathan Stewart founded Lamberton Works, a two-kiln pottery company. The company continued under this name until Thomas Maddock purchased it. D. William Scammell later bought out Maddock's interest, and in 1923, he and his five brothers assumed full control and changed the name to Scammell China Company. The company closed in 1955.
