Castanea Dairy Company Ruler |
Description |
The ruler is brown and rectangular, measuring up to 12 inches. On the front, there is a black inscription that reads, "CASTANEA MILK FROM TRENTON'S FINEST MILK PLANT." The back of the ruler features a second black inscription that reads, "FOR BETTER HEALTH. CASTANEA MILK. BUILDS STRONG TEETH. STANWOOD HILLSON CORP. BROOKLINE, MASS." The phrase "CASTANEA MILK" is significantly larger than the rest of the inscription, while "STANWOOD HILLSON CORP. BROOKLINE, MASS." is much smaller in size. According to the Hamilton Scrapbook blog, Henry W. Comfort was the owner of Castanea Dairy Company. Comfort operated a farm in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, which supplied fresh milk to much of Trenton, New Jersey. In addition to his dairy business, Comfort was president and treasurer of the International Pottery Co. in Trenton, president of the Yardley National Bank, vice president of the Moon Nursery Co., and a manager of the Friends' Asylum for the Insane, among other business ventures in Trenton and eastern Pennsylvania. Comfort was also passionate about growing Japanese chestnut trees on his farm. He chose the name "Castanea Dairy Company" because "Castanea" is the botanical name for the chestnut.
