Title |
Castanea Dairy Company Milk Bottle 1 |
Description |
The bottle is clear and cylindrical, tapering slightly toward the top, with a thick rim. On the front, an embossed inscription reads, "CASTANEA DAIRY CO. TRENTON MTC N.J." On the back, an embossed Castanea Dairy Company logo features two "C"s superimposed in front of a "D," with the inner "C" significantly smaller than the outer one. Near the bottom of the back, another embossed inscription reads, "ONE PINT LIQUID." The top of the bottle is open, revealing the inside. The embossed logo also appears on the bottom of the bottle, with a further inscription below it that reads, "29. T. MFC. Co." According to the Hamilton Scrapbook blog, Henry W. Comfort was the owner of Castanea Dairy Company. He operated a farm in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, which supplied fresh milk to much of Trenton, New Jersey. In addition to running his dairy business, Comfort served as president and treasurer of the International Pottery Co. in Trenton, president of the Yardley National Bank, vice president of the Moon Nursery Co., and a manager at the Friends' Asylum for the Insane. Comfort was also an enthusiast of growing Japanese chestnut trees on his farm. He chose the name "Castanea Dairy Company" because "Castanea" is the botanical name for chestnut. Citations: Glover, T.
