Stangl Pottery Apple Delight Cream Pitcher |
Description |
This white cylindrical pitcher features a design of apples and grapes on both the front and back. The pitcher has a cylindrical shape with a slight jut on the right side near the top. The apple design consists of three circles: the outermost circle is reddish-purple, the middle circle is dark yellow, and the innermost circle is yellow. A brown stem with three green leaves extends from the apple. The grapes are depicted as green circles with brown "L"-shaped markings inside them. Above the grapes, there are dark green squiggly lines: the left line is more vertical, while the right line is more horizontal. Below the fruit, a thick green line encircles the bottom of the pitcher. The back of the pitcher mirrors the front design. On the left side, there is a semi-circular handle. The top of the pitcher is open, revealing the inside, with both the rim and the interior of the pitcher painted brown. The bottom of the pitcher bears a brown Stangl logo near the center. The top of the logo reads "Hand Painted," followed by an oval that contains the inscription "Stangl. TRENTON N.J." Beneath the oval, the words "Since 1805. APPLE DELIGHT" are displayed. To the right of the logo is a horizontally placed black "K." According to Stanglpottery.org, the company's origins trace back to 1814 when Hill Pottery was founded in Flemington, New Jersey. The company evolved over the years, particularly under Abram Fulper's ownership in the 1860s, transitioning from earthenware to stoneware. In 1910, Martin Stangl joined the company and later became its president after Fulper's death in 1928. Stangl Pottery, as it was known after 1955, became famous for its hand-printed dinnerware and innovations like VaseKraft vases. By the 1940s, Stangl pottery was highly popular, but the company closed in November 1978. According to Susan Eastman of the Herald Times, Stangl's significance in American ceramics includes creating the first open-stock solid-color dinnerware and popularizing the practice of demonstrating pottery in public spaces, such as department stores. The company also pioneered "jobbing" ceramic parts for other manufacturers. Citations: Eastman, S. (2019, August 23). HT.Stangl Art Pottery.
