Stangl Pottery Tulip Creamer Jug |
Description |
A white cylindrical-shaped milk creamer featuring yellow flowers on the front and back. The creamer is designed with a spout at its right end for pouring milk, while the handle is positioned on the left side. The top of the creamer is rimmed with a thick yellow line. The floral design consists of a brown stem with green and dark green leaves, supporting three yellow flowers-one at the top, one on the left side, and one on the right side. Each flower has three green circles extending from it. The same design is replicated on the back of the creamer. The inside of the creamer is brown with two indentations near the top and bottom of the handle. The bottom of the creamer is also brown and features the Stangl symbol, which is an oval with the words "STANGL, TERA RO, MADE IN TRENTON, USA," some of which are faded. Below the symbol, the word "Tulip" is inscribed, and the letter "S" is engraved near the top. According to Stanglpottery.org, the company's origins trace back to 1814 when Hill Pottery was founded in Flemington, New Jersey. The company evolved over the years, particularly under Abram Fulper's ownership in the 1860s, transitioning from earthenware to stoneware. In 1910, Martin Stangl joined the company and later became its president after Fulper's death in 1928. Stangl Pottery, as it was known after 1955, became famous for its hand-printed dinnerware and innovations like VaseKraft vases. By the 1940s, Stangl pottery was highly popular, but the company closed in November 1978. According to Susan Eastman of the Herald Times, Stangl's significance in American ceramics includes creating the first open-stock solid-color dinnerware and popularizing the practice of demonstrating pottery in public spaces, such as department stores. The company also pioneered "jobbing" ceramic parts for other manufacturers. Citations: Eastman, S. (2019, August 23). HT.Stangl Art Pottery.
