Crossley Machine Company Gear Mold |
Description |
The object is a brown, cylindrical gear with 15 elevated ridges surrounding an inner circle. The ridges are a darker shade of brown than the slightly lighter inner circle. On the front of the gear, there is an elevated metal cylinder near the left edge at the bottom, and a circular indentation near the center. The back of the gear is slightly darker and smaller than the front, with a large, elevated wooden cylinder near its center. Accompanying the object is a note that reads: "Wooden pattern for casting a gear, rescued from the Crosley Machine Works on Monmouth and East State streets. Gift of Joshua Kavett, December 1999." It appears the name of the company, "Crosley Machine Works," was misspelled in the note. According to Joshua A. Kavett's book The History of Fisher & Norris Eagle Anvil Works, Joseph F. Crosley founded the Crosley Machine Company in 1879. The company primarily produced equipment for clay and ceramic factories. At its peak, Crosley Machine Works operated a pattern shop, an iron foundry, a machine shop, and a blacksmith shop, though the blacksmith shop saw less use in later years. In 1961, Crosley acquired the rights to produce Fisher and Norris anvils. However, due to a decline in the demand for ceramic products and increasing environmental regulations, Crosley closed its iron foundry in 1979. The company finally ceased operations in 1999.
