Willets Manufacturing Company Blue Pattern Oval Serving Dish |
Description |
This white oval serving dish features a blue pattern along the edges, with slightly bumpy rims. The right and left sides have semicircular juts. The pattern consists of cross-like shapes with curved bottoms connecting to other crosses on either side. The front of the dish is slightly caved in, with the back raised. A thick rim separates the edge from the rest of the back. At the center of the base, there is a black Willets Manufacturing Company logo. The logo consists of a circle with pinstripes and two pointed ends at the top and bottom. Inside the circle, two banners display "W.M.CO." and "ARNO." According to Harry Rinker of WorthPoint, Joseph Willets, Daniel Willets, and Edmund R. Willets purchased Excelsior Pottery Works in 1879. Willets Manufacturing Company initially produced a wide range of items including granite wares, dinnerware, majolica, and porcelain insulators. In 1886, Walter Scott Lenox took over the decoration department and helped shift the company toward hard porcelain production. The company entered receivership in 1909 and was rebranded as New Jersey Pottery Company. Citations: Rinkler, H. (n.d.-b).
