General Porcelain 7.5 Glove Mold |
Description |
This white right-hand glove mold consists of a stand and a hand. The stand is cylindrical with a thick base, and its texture is mostly smooth. Just above the base, there is a blue inscription that reads: "7 1/2 BP. GENERAL PORCELAIN. TRENTON, NJ. U.S.A. PAT. PEND." The "7 1/2 BP" refers to the glove size. Above the inscription, two blue lines run parallel, and to the right of the inscription, the date "JAN 11 1971" is written in blue. The hand itself is made of a rougher material and features outstretched fingers, with the thumb placed directly in front of the pointer finger. The mold has an oval-shaped hole at the bottom. According to the Potteries of Trenton Society, Robinson, Dorothy and Bill Feeny's The Official Price Guide to American Pottery & Porcelain, and Cindy Fahnestock-Schaefer of Hubpages, Stephen J. Judnak and Joseph Przechacki founded General Porcelain in 1939. Initially focused on manufacturing laboratory and industrial pottery, such as electrical porcelain, the company became renowned for producing glove molds by the 1950s. These molds were used in the production of latex and rubber gloves, with machines dipping the molds into rubber or latex mass to create the gloves. At its peak, General Porcelain employed 50 people and reported $6 million in gross income. Citations: Fahnestock-Schaeffer, C. (n.d.).
