Description |
A silver cuboid-shaped letterpress features an embossed inscription written in reverse on the front. The inscription reads, "TRENTON STATE GAZETTE." According to The Directory of New Jersey Newspapers by William C. Wright and Paul A. Stellhorn, the Trenton State Gazette was a newspaper published in the city of Trenton, New Jersey, from 1927 until 1942. The origins of the Trenton State Gazette trace back to 1792 with a newspaper called the New-Jersey State Gazette. In 1796, the paper changed its name to the State Gazette & New-Jersey Advertiser, but in 1799, it reverted back to New-Jersey State Gazette. In 1800, the paper merged with the Federalist newspaper, forming the Federalist & New Jersey State Gazette. By 1802, the combined publication settled on the name Trenton Federalist, which continued until 1829, when it merged with the True American newspaper and once again became the New-Jersey State Gazette. In 1840, the New-Jersey State Gazette began releasing a tri-weekly edition called the State Gazette. After becoming a daily publication in 1847, the paper adopted the name Daily State Gazette. In 1857, it merged with the New Jersey Daily Republican to form the Daily State Gazette and Republican, but soon returned to the Daily State Gazette name. In 1918, the paper simplified its name to State Gazette, and in 1927, it changed its name for the final time to become the Trenton State Gazette. Citations: Wright, W. C., & Stellhorn, P. A. (1977).
