Title |
Trent Tile Company Brown Patterned Tile |
Description |
The tile is brown and rectangular, featuring an embossed pattern on the front. The pattern consists of three leaves and two circles. The leaves on the right and left sides are only partially visible, while the central leaf points diagonally to the bottom left. The two circles are formed by a series of small vertical lines, with additional small diagonal lines inside each circle. The back of the tile is white, with two indented rectangles. Four elevated circles are positioned at each of the corners, and these circles appear to be made of felt rather than ceramic. In the upper left corner, there is an inscription in black ink that reads, "Trent Tile," though it is partially covered by one of the elevated circles. Additionally, there is an embossed inscription on the top indented rectangle near the center that reads, "TRENT." Below this, to the lower left, there is a white piece of paper with another inscription in black ink that reads, "Trent Tile." According to the Potteries of Trenton Society, Robinson, Dorothy, and Bill Feeny's book The Official Price Guide to American Pottery & Porcelain, and Michael Padwee's article The Manufacture of Ceramic Tiles in Trenton-Part 2: The Trent Tile Company, the Trent Tile Company, also known as Trent Tile Works, was in operation from 1882 until 1939. The company's most notable designers were Isaac Broome and William Wood Gallimore. At its peak, Trent Tile Works operated over 20 kilns and employed 300 workers. The company was primarily known for manufacturing embossed tiles. After struggling financially, the company was purchased by Wenzcel Tile in either 1939 or 1940.
