General Porcelain 10 Glove Mold |
Description |
A white left-hand glove mold, composed of a stand and a hand, both made of a smooth material. The stand is cylindrical in shape, and there is a blue inscription around the bottom of the stand that reads, "OCT 2 1986. 10. GENERAL PORCELAIN. TRENTON, N.J." The hand has all of its fingers outstretched, with the thumb positioned directly in front of the pointer finger. The bottom of the mold is made of a rougher material compared to the smooth stand and hand. In the center of the bottom, there is an oval-shaped hole revealing the inside of the mold. Just above the hole, there is a black inscription written in ink that reads, "12.50 + TAX as is." The "50" in the inscription is underlined and slightly smaller than the "12." According to the Potteries of Trenton Society, Robinson, Dorothy and Bill Feeny's The Official Price Guide to American Pottery & Porcelain, and Cindy Fahnestock-Schaefer of Hubpages, Stephen J. Judnak and Joseph Przechacki founded General Porcelain in 1939. Initially focused on manufacturing laboratory and industrial pottery, such as electrical porcelain, the company became renowned for producing glove molds by the 1950s. These molds were used in the production of latex and rubber gloves, with machines dipping the molds into rubber or latex mass to create the gloves. At its peak, General Porcelain employed 50 people and reported $6 million in gross income. Citations: Fahnestock-Schaeffer, C. (n.d.).
