R. Elliott & Co Green Bottle |
Description |
A green cylindrical-shaped bottle with embossed inscriptions on both the front and back. The bottle narrows significantly near the top and has an applied blob rim. The inscription on the front reads, "R. ELLIOTT & CO. TRENTON. N.J.," with "R. ELLIOTT & CO." curved along the top. The inscription on the back reads a single large "E," which is much bigger than the rest of the text. The top is open, revealing the inside. According to research by Hollie Bishop, Robert Elliott, an Irish immigrant, moved to Trenton in 1854. He co-founded the Elliott and Ledlie Bottling Company with his partner, Ledlie. After Ledlie's death, Elliott changed the company name to R. Elliott & Co. According to the 1874 edition of Boyd's Trenton City Directory, the company bottled mineral water, ale, and porter. Elliott primarily operated from a building on Broad Street. Notably, an event reported in the August 19th, 1917 edition of the Trenton Sunday Times mentioned cows being slaughtered outside Elliott's business, a significant moment in the city's history. R. Elliott & Co. was in operation from around 1871 until 1880. Citations: Boyd, W. H., & Boyd, A. (1874). Boyds’ Trenton City Directory. A. Boyd. Cleary, J. J. (1917, August 19).
