Title |
Glasgow Pottery Floral Pitcher |
Description |
The pitcher is white and cylindrical in shape, with a floral design adorning the front, left, back, and right sides. It has gold rims around both the top and bottom. The pitcher is narrow at the top and bottom, widening at the center. The floral design features green stems and leaves, with flower heads in shades of green, white, yellow, and pink. The majority of the flowers are green, but there is one pink flower, one white flower, and two yellow flowers. In addition to the flowers, there are several white shapes with gold outlines near the top and center of the pitcher. These shapes resemble teardrops. The handle, located on the right side, is shaped like a half-heart and decorated with horizontal and vertical gold lines. The top of the pitcher is open, with a slightly protruding section on the right side. The rim is bumpy along the top. On the bottom of the pitcher, there is a blue Glasgow Pottery logo. The logo features a curved banner at the top, inscribed with the word "SEMI-VITREOUS." Below this, there is a circle containing the word "SAPPHO." Beneath the circle, another curved banner reads "J.M. & S. Co.," which likely refers to the "John Moses & Sons Company," an alternate name for Glasgow Pottery Company. Additionally, there is a gold number "1432" on the bottom, written vertically and upside down. According to the Potteries of Trenton Society and other historical sources, the Glascow Pottery Company was founded in 1863 by John Moses. They gained recognition for producing John Hancock bowls and saucers for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. John Moses passed away in 1902, and in 1906, the Glascow Pottery Company was sold to the Maddox Pottery Company. Citations: Glasgow Pottery. Potteries of Trenton Society.
