Glascow Pottery Company Boston Tea Party Centennial Commerative Saucer 1 |
Description |
A white circular saucer commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. The front of the saucer features black writing around the base, which reads, "CENTENNIAL COMMEMORATIVE CELEBRATION OF THE BOSTON TEA PARTY DEC.16th 1773." Around the center of the plate, the word "PHILADELPHIA" is written in a circle, with a design resembling a "C" with two lines extending from its right and left sides beneath it. Inside the circle is the year "1873" with four arrows pointing outward from the top, right, bottom, and left. The front of the plate has a slight inward curve, while the back is slightly elevated with a thick rim separating the base from the rest of the back. The base of the plate features a black Glascow Pottery Company logo in the center that reads, "GLASCOW POTTERY CO. TRENTON. N.J." with two lines extending from the sides of the word "Co." According to the Potteries of Trenton Society and other historical sources, the Glascow Pottery Company was founded in 1863 by John Moses. They gained recognition for producing John Hancock bowls and saucers for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. John Moses passed away in 1902, and in 1906, the Glascow Pottery Company was sold to the Maddox Pottery Company. As for the Boston Tea Party, it was a protest that occurred in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 16th, 1773, led by the Sons of Liberty. The group organized the protest in response to taxes imposed by the British government, which they contested, arguing that they should not be taxed without political representation. Dressed as Native Americans, the Sons of Liberty dumped approximately 342 chests of tea into the Atlantic Ocean. This act became a key event in the lead-up to the American Revolution.
