Maddock's Lamberton Works Floral Sprig Cup |
Description |
A white cylindrical-shaped cup with a gold rim and two images of floral sprigs on the front and back. The floral sprigs feature green leaves, purple and yellow flowers, and brown twigs, and are set against small light blue backgrounds. The sprig on the front has more flowers than the one on the back. The top of the cup is open, revealing the inside, and the gold rim slightly curves inward at the top. The bottom of the cup is slightly smaller than the body, and in the center of the bottom is a green Maddock Pottery Company logo. The logo features an image of a crown at the top, followed by a circle. Inside the circle, the words "MADDOCK'S LAMBERTON WORKS" are inscribed, with the word "PORCELAIN" beneath it. According to Harry Rinkler of WorthPoint, Scammell China Company originated in 1869 when George Comfort, Thomas Bell, and Jonathan Stewart founded Lamberton Works, a two-kiln pottery company. The company continued under this name until Thomas Maddock purchased it. D. William Scammell later bought out Maddock's interest, and in 1923, he and his five brothers assumed full control and changed the name to Scammell China Company. The company closed in 1955. Thomas Maddock, born in 1818 in Staffordshire, England, came from a family of potters. He emigrated to New York in 1847 with his first wife, Honor Bossom, and their two sons. After opening a China decorating business in New York City, he continued his work in pottery following Bossom's death in 1851. Maddock remarried Isabella Smith in 1852, and together they had three more sons. In 1873, Maddock moved to Trenton, where he established his pottery company. The business rapidly expanded, producing a variety of pottery, including sanitary ware, dinnerware, and utensils. Maddock's company grew further by acquiring rival companies such as Glasgow Pottery and Lamberton Works. Over time, the company was known under different names, including Millington, Astbury and Maddock, Maddock's Lamberton Works, and Maddock Pottery Company. Thomas Maddock passed away in 1899, but his sons carried on his legacy, continuing to run the family business. In 1923, the Maddocks sold the Lamberton Works property to the Scammell family. The entire operation was eventually sold in 1929 to American Radiator and Standard Sanitary Corporation, marking the end of the Maddock family's pottery legacy. Citations: Rinkler, H. (n.d.-a).
