Scammell China Company Gold Floral Dessert Dish |
Description |
This white and brown circular dessert dish features a floral and star design near the top rim. The dish is oval-shaped with a slight indentation, almost like a bowl. The designs are exclusively along the rim, with a black, vine-like squiggly line separating the star pattern from the floral pattern. The background of the star pattern is brown, while the floral pattern's background is white. There are four floral designs in total, one on each side of the plate. The floral patterns consist of a reddish-purple flower on the left and a light orange flower on the top and right. The rest of the dish is white. The back of the dish is elevated, with both an inner and outer rim. Near the center of the back, there is a black Scammell China Company logo. The top of the logo reads "IVORY LAMBERTON." Below the words, there is an image featuring a crown atop a shield, surrounded by a laurel wreath. A large "S" is centered on the shield, with the word "CHINA" beneath it, inside the wreath. Below the image, the inscription reads "SCAMMELL. MADE IN AMERICA." Further below, the dish is marked with "DESIGNED EXPRESSLY FOR Chalfonte Haddon Hall. JOHN WANAMAKER. PATENT NO. 89860." According to Harry Rinkler of WorthPoint, Scammell China Company originated in 1869 when George Comfort, Thomas Bell, and Jonathan Stewart founded Lamberton Works, a two-kiln pottery company. The company continued under this name until Thomas Maddock purchased it. D. William Scammell later bought out Maddock's interest, and in 1923, he and his five brothers assumed full control and changed the name to Scammell China Company. The company closed in 1955.
